There were a lot of rumors floating around then about why the residents abandoned the 'Cove': TB outbreak, a massacre by other mountain people, revenuers raided it, etc. We crossed the Nolichucky using the Clinchfield RR bridge at Unaka Springs. Just after we crossed Devils Creek and were in NC, we had a very strange encounter.

Three young girls (we guessed 10 to 12 years old) were on the tracks walking toward us (coming from the direction of the Cove). They had on their white 'Sunday-go-to-meeting' dresses and were walking three-abreast. As they got closer to us, we could see that the girl in the middle was carrying a burlap bag under her arm with something in it that was about the size of a head of cabbage. It looked like blood was leaking from it, and it was all over the girl's dress, and running down her left leg. We could see that the girl to her right was carrying an old style, long barrel revolver, and the girl to her left was carrying a large knife. When we finally met up, we stepped off the tracks and let them go by. Not a word was said by either group, and the girls all had blank, non-blinking stares. They did nothing to acknowledge our presence as they passed.

We made it to the path that led up to the Cove, but we were too rattled to go into the it because we thought that they might have come from there. We headed back on the tracks to Unaka Springs, hoping we wouldn't meet up with the mystery girls again (we didn't). It was several years before I actually made into the cove. This time, we rafted down the 'Chucky' to it (we put in at Poplar NC). It wasn't quite as dilapidated then, but there were rattlesnakes at one of the houses under the floor boards.billahlstrom@gmail.comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16709556265984814357noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7528807966612274413.post-78055828596675687642019-07-15T06:45:59.919-04:002019-07-15T06:45:59.919-04:00I have written a science fiction series, THE LOST ...I have written a science fiction series, THE LOST COVE SERIES, with four novels set in the Lost Cove, Bumpas Cove and the mountains around Erwin, Tennessee. Her family moved there to avoid the war. She lives to be 98. As a girl, the only way to get in and out of lost cove was to hop a train. She always walked with a limp due to displacing her hip while doing so. The story in our family is there was another family who lived in a tree up there in their community. I wonder if the suspected train wreck is actually one of the railcar's which was used to house the railmen during Lost Cove's heyday, abandoned as technological progress made the area 'obsolete'. It's cool to see pix of items today and before the fire.

I recently published a science-fiction novel ("Flightsuit") that is based on Lost Cove and Bumpas Cove. I've hiked to the Lost Cove many times, and I'm sure we all enjoy and appreciate many of the same elements of this experience. Here's an excerpt from the book…

"Sometimes the houses were gone entirely, leaving only smooth brown river stones stacked to form a house's crude foundations. Each spring daffodils bloomed. They marked boundaries of porch and path between the little houses where mothers and daughters planted them. They'd not realized all their hands went to would be left behind and forgotten. The wood and stones that had sheltered them from freezing cold winters and the deluge downpours of Tennessee summer rains crumbled without human attention, but the most fragile efforts they'd laid their hands to, the flowers, outlasted all. The flowers bloomed every summer, with none to admire them."

I hope the book is especially enjoyable for those who have actually been to these places and I welcome local feedback and reviews. It's available at Amazon.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00422492454149376116noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7528807966612274413.post-12769255848207395602013-10-15T13:25:35.133-04:002013-10-15T13:25:35.133-04:00Very Awesome!
