This morning I headed out early to do some hiking down in Fort Collins. My destination for the day: the Foothills Trail and Ridgeline Loop from the Reservoir Ridge Natural Area Trailhead near Horsetooth Reservoir. I started the drive in the dark, but the sun was rising just as I hit Cheyenne and so I made a short detour to photograph the sunrise at the Wyoming State Capitol.
Besides the capitol building, there is a statue of Robert Burns nearby that made for a nice subject in the rising sun.
After a short stop to pick up breakfast, I headed out of town and south into Colorado. I arrived at the trailhead, a small, gravel parking lot just off the road the traverses the east side of the Horsetooth Reservoir. I hit the trail, climbing up a ridge with some nice views of the reservoir and surrounding foothills.
From the ridge the trail descended down the side opposite the reservoir for a bit, before climbing back up to the ridge and eventually crossing the other side of the road and more closely following the shoreline. There were many views of the man-made lake over the next few miles.
Eventually, the trail made its way south to the Rotary Park Trailhead where I found the Ridgeline Trail and followed it north back towards the trailhead. The trail followed the road closely and there were interesting views of the curving roadway and distant hills.
I made it back to the car pretty early in the day and decided to head over to Stodgy Brewing for a beer before my drive home.
