Day one of my Superior Hiking Trail odyssey is officially in the books! Today's hike was a great start to the trip. Theday began, however, in Grand Marais where Noelle, Parker and I stayed for the night. When I awoke at 6:30 this morning I looked out the window and was treated to a view of brilliant blue skies and the sun shining upon Grand Marais Bay. It was impossible to get back to sleep after that view. I took a shower and made some coffee and soon Noelle was up and about.
We decided to hike the short Sweethearts' Bluff Trail in town to get our day started. After that we checked out of the hotel and got breakfast at the Blue Water Cafe. Then we hit the road heading northeast up Minnesota highway 61. We stopped for another short hike at Kadunce River state wayside. The walk along the river was quite spectacular passing several waterfalls and above a deep, narrow gorge.
The hike was enjoyable and led to a section of the Superior Hiking Trail I hope to visit again in the next few days.
After returning to the car it was time to head to our ultimate destination for the day, the northeastern terminus of the Superior Hiking Trail on Otter Lake Road. To read more about Eric's Superior Hiking Trail backpacking trip click here.
