Today we kicked off our 2023 Roadtrip Family Vacation. Last night we drove 4 hours to Frisco, Colorado after work. Sierra just finished fourth grade and so she has an "Every Kid Outdoors" pass. We asked her where she wanted to go with it and her response was "Arches National Park." Ultimately, we are headed to Moab, Utah; but to get there and back we need to pass through Colorado.
We awoke this morning and drove from Frisco to the outskirts of Breckenridge for a hike on the Iowa Hill Mine Trail. We ate a quick breakfast at the trailhead,
and then hit the trail.
As the name of the trail would suggest, there were a lot of mining artifacts along the trail. They represented different mining techniques that have been used in this area over the years.
Besides mining equipment, there were also blooming wildflowers to be seen,
and spectacular views of the mountains that surround town.
One of the highlights for me was seeing the old boarding house used by the miners.
Once we had returned to the trailhead
we took a drive into town to have a look around.
Despite being extremely touristy, I found the town of Breckenridge to be very charming. We walked along the Blue River and admired the views and public art.
Eventually, we started to make our way over to the Illinois Creek Trail via the Blue River. We passed by a memorial to the 10th Mountain Division,
and over the the trailhead for the Breckenridge Troll. It was a short walk to see the famous wooden artwork, and the trail there was packed with people.
After having our photo taken at the troll, we made our way back towards downtown. We stopped at the Highline Park on the way to look at the train exhibits,
and admired the views from the trail as it passed through town.
For lunch, we stopped at the Breckenridge Brewery.
After lunch, we rode the free gondola about halfway up one of the mountains used by the ski area.
It didn't really lead to any views, just an amusement park area. We decided to head back down. After another short walk along the Blue River
we were ready to move on to our day's next adventure.
